Don't Want Watered Down Theology

Dear Fr. Bloom,

I am 21 years old and a senior at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. I have a question for you, but first I'd like to give you a little bit of background information. I am majoring in music, specifically piano performance, and will graduate next May. Right now, I am considering what I would like to do after I earn my undergraduate degree. Law school was the direction I was heading (yes, I know my major is music), but it really doesn't appeal to me. Another one of the options that I've been considering is something in a theological field, such as teaching at the college level or working for the Church. In looking at different Catholic universities for graduate programs in theology I came across your article, The Catholic University: A Call For Integrity. Having attended a jesuit high school, I can identify with much of what you discussed in that article. Father, I don't want to go to a graduate school to learn theology that is watered down and consists of courses like "Why the Church is evil 101." My question for you is, what universities or programs do you recommend that would be a good place for someone like me to receive an advanced degree in theology? Any input you have would be extremely helpful.

Thank you,

Dear Matt,

Great to hear from you and your desire to study theology. There are a number of excellent Catholic universities like Aquinas, Christendom, Ave Maria, Steubenville, etc. I think I refered to a few of them at the end of the article. The key issue is whether a Catholic University accepts "Ex Corde Ecclesiae" which is intended to guarantee "truth in packaging," that is, if one uses the Catholic title that one teach Catholic doctrine.

Let me know how this goes for you. I'm sure you are more adept at doing an internet search than I, but if you need any further help I would be glad to try.

Fr. Phil Bloom
